The history of White Rose

The rose as an ornamental and medicinal plant, rich in essential oils, was highly valued already in antiquity. In the cultures of Levant, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, rose was not only a raw material for manufacturing costly perfumes and medicines, but used to be also a symbol of beauty, perfection, charm, love and passion. The number of rose varieties is well over 10,000 and new ones are ever being created. But as for aromatic material, there are no better ones than Damascus Rose (Rosa x damascena Mill.), which is also called Bulgarian Rose, originating from Asia Minor, Hundred Petaled Rose (Rosa x centifolia), cultivated in France by the end of 16th century, and White Rose Rosa x alba L., considered to be a hybrid of Damascus Rose and wild Dog Rose, one of the oldest varieties, cultivated for ca. 4,000 years. It boasts a wonderful deep, rich and pervasively pure fragrance of rose with slight citrus overtones. Flower water obtained from its petals is considered an exclusive, very rare hydrosol.

The origin of White Rose Hydrosol

White Rose, much as Damascus Rose, needs special climatic conditions for its cultivation. The famous Rose Valley in Bulgaria is an ideal place with centuries-old tradition. The flowers are picked over the time of one month at the turn of May and June, always at daybreak, before the flowers open, in order not to lose too much aromatic substance. The collected flowers are immediately taken to a distillery, where one of the most valuable essential oils is obtained via the process of steam distillation (in order to obtain 1 kilo of essential oil, ca. 4 tons of fresh rose petals are needed) and along with it the flower water (hydrosol), i.e. distillation water containing plant particles and ca. 1% of essential oil.
